The effects of gravity and aging commonly affect the eyebrows. The eyebrows drop from their youthful position to a lower position near the edge of the upper eyelid. This can make the upper eyelid look full, and patients feel this process leaves them looking tired or angry when they are not. The same aging process can affect the skin of the forehead, particularly just above the nose. Development of skin deep grooves in this area contribute even more to an angry appearance.

Good candidates for browlift have dense hair without a receeding hair line. Thin hair, marked assymetery of their face or eyebrows, or skin which has been damaged by years in the sun make surgical correction more difficult. The Plastic Surgeon should spend enough time with the patient to describe the proposed operation and should ensure the patient’s expectations are realistic regarding the possible outcome.

BROWLIFT OPERATIONS
The incision is usually made in the hairline so that hair will eventually cover the surgical scar. The forehead skin and muscle is raised and tightened, which pulls the eyebrows up into a more youthful position. At the same time, the muscles responsible for the vertical skin deep furrows can be cut. This usually results in smoothing of the central forehead .. Both vertical and horizontal forehead lines are usually improved by this technique.

Most browlift procedures are still being done as described above. Recently it has become possible to do browlift through an endoscope. This is a small round tube with a fiberoptic light which allows the surgeon to operate through tiny incisions. The small incisions make the procedure attractive to the patient and many surgeons feel they can get good results in browlift with this technique.

 Anesthesia
Anesthesia for this procedure may be a short general anesthetic gasses by or is most commonly done with intravenous sedation and local anethetic administration. This latter technique is sometimes referred to as “twilight sleep”. The procedure is almost always done as an outpatient operation whether carried out in the hospital or in an outpatient surgicenter.

Postoperative Chang and Care

Swelling and bruising are expected after a browlift. Occasionally the eyes may be swollen shut for a period of time. The time it takes for the swelling and bruising to disappear is as individual as each patient. The patient should have a spouse or friend stay with them the first 24 hours and will need someone to drive them home from the hospital or surgicenter. The bruising will gradually go away over several weeks, but the deep lines above the nose will show more immediate improvement.Despite great care in the design and execution of the procedure there can sometimes be damage to the hair follicles near the incision so there is some small risk of hair loss along the incision line.
The purpose of a browlift is to rejuvenate the upper portion of the face. In some patients, improvement in the middle portion of the face and neck may also be desired. This can be accomplished using upper and lower eyelids to further improve the “tired look.”

All surgical procedures can have complications. Infection, bleeding, and damage to important structures such as nerves in the operating area may occur. Each patient assumes a different degree of risk with every surgical procedure and these should be explained by your surgeon and understood by you before you proceed with any procedure. . No surgeon can guarantee a complication-free outcome for any procedure. Find a surgeon with proper training and experience in the procedure you want and who is able to handle complications if they should occur.
