Overweight patients who have localized area of fat removed must we willing to accept a greater chance of contour regularities, and less ideal redraping skin (skin conforming to the new contour of the underlying tissues). Also, patients with skin dimpling (cellulite) prior to surgery will still have it afterwards.

As in any surgical procedure, the most common complication that may result is a hematoma. This is a collection of blood under the skin. In about 2% of all cosmetic operations this collection of blood must be removed in the immediate postoperative period. Small hematoma are simply removed, and treated several days after surgery in an outpatient procedure. The development and Evacuation of a hematoma does not affect the end result of your surgery, but it may Prolong the healing process for a week or two. Complications such as infection or bleeding can occur, but only in the rarest of cases. Each complication can be treated and may result in a prolonged recovery period.

These and other obscure complications will be discussed in detail with you during your personal consultation with the doctor.

Cost of liposuction

$ 1,000 - $ 2,000 Canadian per area.
Monthly payments can be arranged for those who qualify.

In more severe cases where stretching and scarring have occurred, the underlying muscles can be tightened giving you a flat, firm, tight stomach and a thinner waist as well. This procedure is especially effective for women who have experienced pregnancy. There are three different techniques that Dr. Bederman may perform depending on the extent of the tissue damage, and the result the patient wishes to achieve.

Tummy Tucks can also be performed in conjunction with Liposuction to achieve optimum results.

    Before & After
Photographs
Mini Tummy Tuck

The Mini Tummy Tuck is designed for patients who have loose skin in the lower abdominal areas (below the navel), but have retained good muscle tone above the navel. The advantages of this procedure are that the incision tends to be shorter than in a Full or Extended Tummy Tuck, and the navel (belly button) stays in it’s original location.

The Procedure

The surgeon makes an incision above the Pubic hair and below the bikini line. Next, the skin is lifted, excess fat removed, muscles tightened, and the excess skin removed. The surgeon then closes the opening by bringing the upper line of the skin down to the lower line incision and suturing it together.

Cost

$ 2,500 - $ 3,000 Canadian
Monthly payments can be arranged for those who qualify.

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures body in North America. Not only can it be used to remove fat from the smaller areas of the face and neck, body treatments but what can do sit-ups, laps and weight work outs have failed to achieve. There is such a thing as exercise resistant fat, and Liposuction is appropriate for areas such as hips, buttocks, thighs, bellies and “love handles”. It can also be used to remove fat deposits on arms, calves, knees, ankles and above the breast. The best candidates for Liposuction individuals are near or at their ideal weight. Liposuction is not a substitute for exercise or weight loss, but if you have localized areas of fat that exercise and dieting can not improve, then Liposuction may be the perfect way to get rid of that fat.

The recent development of the tumescent Liposuction technique in which a medicated solution is introduced to the surrounding tissues while liposuction is taking place, not only reduces the amount of Anesthetic required during the procedure, but significantly reduces the amount of bleeding during surgery, post-operative bruising, swelling and soreness. Recovery time and post-operative discomfort generally known for pre-tumescent liposuction procedures has now been virtually cut in half, allowing patients to return to normal schedules even sooner with less medication. The tumescent technique is most beneficial for areas of the body that have smaller concentration of fat.

Liposuction can be performed on many different areas at the same time or can be combined with other procedures such as body surgery and Buttock Lift Tummy Tuck and Thigh Lifts for optimal results.

The Procedure

The surgeon makes an incision about a 1 / 4 “length near the site where he wants to remove the fat and inserts a cannula (a thin tube with an opening near the end) into the incision. Carefully, the cannula is moved back and forth under the skin Administering a medicated solution to the immediate area while a Suction device pulls the unwanted fat through the hole in the cannula, a tube down and out of the body.

This procedure can take from 45 minutes to 2 hours to perform depending on the areas treated.

The Healing Process

Following surgery, a tight fitting of elastic gauze dressing will be placed over the area which will help your skin shrink and conform to the new shape of the underlying tissues. In some cases a corset may be recommended to Insure maximum compression at the site of the surgery, and help reduce any swelling and bruising that may occur. Both corset and bandages are normally removed within a week to 10 days of surgery.

There will be some swelling and bruising following surgery which will subside within a month or two. In some cases where the amount of fat removed is greater than the skins ability to shrink, an Uneven or Rippling effect may be seen on the skin. In general, most patients are up and around a day or two after surgery. You can return to work at this point in time but should restrict all strenuous activities for up to a week or two. After surgery, any pain or discomfort you experience can be controlled with medication. Some patients experience numbness or discomfort which subsides as healing occurs. Scars will be barely notice after surgery and will fade over time.

Anesthesia

A local or general Anesthetic is used. In addition to the Anesthesia, various drugs are given to you before, during and after surgery to make you comfortable.

There has been a great deal of misinformation regarding silicone implants and cancer studies. The facts are that after 30 years of clinical experience and millions of woman receiving implants, there has never been any evidence whatsoever linking silicone implants to cancer or any other disease process. Today all breast implants used in Canada are filled with a saline solution (salt water).

Anesthesia

Breast Augmentation and Breast Lifts are performed using a local Anesthesia In addition to the local, various drugs are given to you before, during and after surgery to make you comfortable. Breast Reduction and Breast Reconstruction are normally performed at Scarborough General Hospital under a General Anesthetic. Also, like the other procedures, various drugs are given to you before and after surgery to make you comfortable.

Post-Op Instructions

Warning: Alcohol and tobacco Prolong swelling and are best avoided 2 weeks following surgery.

You will be discharged possibly with a bra and a tensor bandages wrapped around the bra. You may remove the tensor bandages after 24 hours. The bra should stay on for one week unless the doctor adviser you otherwise. You may sponge bath but keep the bra on your chest and dry.

If antibiotics have been prescribed, you must continue to take them until they are finished.

You may experience some pain and discomfort which is easily controlled with medication. For the first week lifting and avoid any strenuous activities. Bruising and swelling are normal after this surgery and gradually subside.

Excessive bruising and swelling particularly on one side should be reported immediately to The Center.

Seven to ten days after your surgery stitches will be removed and, if required, you will be taught how to massage your breasts in order to keep them soft.

It is not unusual for a patient to go through a period of uncertainty and worry about the appearance of their breasts. It should be understood that it is impossible to judge the final results of the surgery until all swelling has subsided. Immediately after surgery you will experience an increased sense of femininity and confidence. Enjoy this feeling.

Complications That May Result From Breast Surgery

RISK OF COMPLICATIONS: SMALL

The most common complication following Breast Surgery is a “capsular contracture” which can occur in cases where a breast implant is used. In essence, a film of scar tissue forms around the prosthesis causing the breast to feel hard. In most cases, this can be alleviated by applying external pressure. This is done by the surgeon at The Center with or without sedation and the breast will return to its natural, soft state. In rare cases, it may be necessary to open the incision to achieve the same result.

Bleeding and infection may also occur but only in the rarest of cases. Each complication can be treated and may result in a prolonged recovery period. These and other obscure complications will be discussed in detail with you during your personal consultation with the doctor.

For most mastectomy patients, the loss of a breast is a severe emotional loss that can result in a loss of self-esteem, personal identity and femininity. Breast Reconstruction Strive to replace not just the breast, but everything else as well.

The Procedure

There are different approaches which vary according to the type of mastectomy and the condition of the breast skin. When there is enough skin, and if it’s loose and thick enough, reconstruction may be achieved. through a simple implant or prosthesis. An incision is made where the lower portion of the breast would normally be. The surgeon then creates a little pocket beneath the skin and muscle remaining and an implant is placed into the pocket.

When there is not enough skin to accommodate an implant, additional skin from another area is needed. This donor skin is called a “flap” which consists of not only skin, but the muscle and blood vessels that sustain it. Often the broad muscle in the back and its overlying skin is used as donor tissue. The flap is detached and moved underneath the skin ( “tunnelled”) to the breast area where it’s suture to the local skin, forming a pocket for the implant. Sometimes, to “flap” is taken from the abdomen which is “tunnelled” to the breast area and folded on itself. If the Mound is large enough, no implant will be needed, though one may be used if desired.

Another technique involves the use of skin or tissue to expand. This balloon-like device is placed beneath the chest muscle and is gradually filled with a saline solution over several weeks. This Stretches the skin, which then can accommodate an implant or prosthesis.

To reconstructive the nipple and areola, additional surgery may be necessary.

Reconstruction is usually performed in a hospital under general anesthesia, so that you’ll sleep through the entire procedure, which may last 2-7 hours. Afterward, you’ll experience soreness and discomfort which can usually be controlled by medication. You may be up and around in a day or two but you should avoid over activity and refrain from overhead lifting for a few weeks. You should be released from the hospital in 2-5 days.

Every effort is made to make Scars as inconspicuous as possible, but they are an inevitable aspect of any surgery. Scars will fade - not completely, but in most cases, they’ll be very acceptable.

Your new breast may feel Firmer and appear flat or Rounder than your natural breast. It will not have the exact same as your previous breast contour nor will it match your other breast. Though it will not have normal sensation, in time, some feeling should return. This is not an easy procedure, but the potential emotional and psychological benefits are substantial and most patients find it well worth it.

Cost

Breast Reconstruction in Canada is a benefit of the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). If you are visiting us from outside of Canada, your company medical plan may cover the cost of your surgery. We recommend that you check with your medical plan representative for a definitive answer. For those individuals not covered by medical insurance, the cost of this procedure is approximately $ 5000.

Big breasts can be a problem from both a physical and psychological standpoint. Large, oversize breasts dominate any woman’s appearance and make her look top heavy and obese. They can also become a physical burden, painful, distorting the posture, causing difficulty in breathing, backache and irritation at the creation of the breast, and make exercise difficult or impossible.

Psychologically they can also be a burden promoting star, rude comments, and the unwelcome attention. These are just a few of the reasons why women with oversize breasts often choose Breast Reduction.

This procedure can reduce and reshape large breasts by removing excess skin and underlying tissue. An oversize areola (the dark pink skin around the nipple) can be made smaller at the same time. Good candidates for this procedure are women with large, sagging breasts. If your breasts are sagging or not overly large, to Breast Lift may be all you need. While women of all ages can benefit, it’s usually never performed before the breasts are fully developed. The technique used by Dr. Bederman ensures the best possible continuity between the breast and the nipple thus increasing the possibility (but not Guaranteeing) that some woman may be able to breast feed after undergoing the procedure.

The Procedure

The surgeon makes incisions under the breast following the natural contour. Excess tissue, fat and skin are removed and then the nipple, areola and underlying tissue are moved to a new, higher location. When the breasts are extremely oversize, it’s sometimes necessary to completely detach the nipple before it is Relocated, however this is very uncommon. With the nipple in the new location, skin on both sides of the breast is moved down and around the areola and brought together. This firms up and shapes the breast. The incisions are closed and a gauze dressing or surgical bra is put on the patient. The procedure takes about 2 hours to perform.

For a few days after surgery, you’ll probably experience pain and discomfort which can be controlled with medication. You will be up and around in a day or two but will be painful motion. Bruising and swelling usually subsides in a couple of days. Within a week, your dressing is replaced by a soft bra which you’ll wear for several weeks.

You can usually return to work about 10 days after surgery although your breasts may become sore by day’s end. Scars will remain very visible for about a year and then will fade. Although every effort is made to make Scars as inconspicuous as possible, they will be extensive and permanent. But since they are made around and below the nipple, they should not be notice even in low cut clothing.

Cost

$ 4,000 - $ 5,000 Canadian

As the years go by, almost every woman notices a gradual deterioration in the size, shape and feel of her breasts. Gravity, pregnancy, breast feeding, weight gain and loss all take their toll. Breasts sag, Droop, soft, flatten out and may even atrophy and shrink over time. Even if the volume of the breast remains the same, their firmness, and perky Youthful Elasticity position is often lost. A Breast Lift can help solve many of these problems and can also reduce the size of an enlarged, stretched areola (the dark, pink skin of the nipple).

The Procedure

The surgeon makes incisions following the natural contour below the breast and around the areola. Next, the surgeon removes excess skin from the lower part of the breast. The nipple, areola and underlying breast tissue are lifted up to a new, higher position, and the skin that used to be above the nipple is now brought down, around and together to reshape and lift the breast. The procedure takes about 1-1/2 hours to perform.

For women who have only moderate sag, uplift can be achieved though a technique which confines the incision to the area around the areola (the dark, pink skin of the nipple) only. Dr. Bederman will advise you which procedure is most suitable for you during your consultation. Both of these procedures can be combined with a Breast Augmentation for those women who may benefit from both up-lift and augmentation.

After surgery to gauze dressing is carefully wrapped around the breasts and / or they may be placed in a surgical bra. Medication can control any minor pain or discomfort, which will subside in a few days. Swelling and bruising also generally subside in a few days. You may feel a temporary loss of sensation in your breasts and Nipples. This will improve with time.

You may be up and around a day or two after surgery. Within a week, the dressing is replaced with a soft bra, which you’ll wear for several weeks. The sutures come out within two weeks although most Dissolve on their own.

Although every effort is made to make Scars as inconspicuous as possible, they are permanent. For a year they may remain highly visible, then fade to some degree. Since they are around and below the nipple, Scars notice should not be even in low cut clothing or a bathing suit. They’ll fade with time and are easily Concealer by a normal Brassiere. Afterward, lifted your breasts should look younger, healthier and Rejuvenated.

Cost

$ 2,000 - $ 3,000 Canadian
Monthly payments can be arranged for those who qualify.

In a couple of hours I went from a very flat, underdeveloped chest I had always been embarrassed of, to the figure I had always wanted.”

No exercise, medication or mechanical device can change the size of your breasts. Breast Augmentation is the only way you can increase the size of your breasts. Since the early 1960’s more than 2500000 women have undergone this cosmetic procedure.

If you have small, underdeveloped breasts or breasts that have Shrunken or Atrophie after Childbearing, Breast Augmentation can help. There are three common techniques which differ, essentially, only in the location where the incision is made (below the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit). Dr. Bederman will let you know your private consultation during which procedure is best for your body.

The Procedure

After creating the incision, the surgeon lifts the breast tissue up to create a pocket either directly or under the tissue underneath the muscle, depending on the surgeon’s judgment and the patient’s physique. The implant is then placed into the pocket and the incisions are closed using a few stitcher. The procedure takes about 1 to 1-1/2 hours to perform.

After surgery to gauze dressing may be applied and the patient will be placed in a surgical bra. Medication can control any minor pain or discomfort, which should subside in a day or two.

Plastic Surgery is that developed aspect of surgery to correct congenital or acquired deformities, and restore impaired function to the affected areas. Congenital defects include commonly known conditions such as the Cleft or “t” lip. Examples of conditions or acquired defects include the grape skin of burns, correction of burn scar contractures, and even joint replacement in arthritic hands.

The term “Plastic” comes from the Greek meaning to form or plastic mold. Historically, this usually referred to the shaping and molding of skin, cartilage, fat and bone. However, with the development of new “body friendly” materials, Surgeons can now take advantage of implantable plastics such as polyurethane, silicone and other trade name products.

Historical Development of Plastic Surgery

The art of Plastic Surgery was practiced as early as 200 BC in ancient India where women’s noses, Mutilated by their jealous husbands, were reconstructive using flaps of skin from the Forehead.

In Renaissance Italy, Gaspar Tagliacozzi surgeon wrote the first textbook of Plastic Surgery in which he described a procedure whereby a skin flap, taken from the arm of an individual, was used to missing a reconstructive nose.

Probably the greatest step towards the recognition of Plastic Surgery as being a legitimate branch of surgery came in World War I, where current “Plastic Surgery units were opened in British hospitals. These units were designed to treat combat veterans who had received extensive gunshot injuries and burns on the front. The extent and complexity of these kinds of injuries, never before seen, tested the Ingenuity and inventiveness of these “Pioneers” to the craft.

It was not until after World War II that the principles of flap surgery were applied to the burgeoning field of Cosmetic Surgery. New techniques, such as placing incisions in the skin of natural Folds made surgical cuts and Scars almost invisible. Even more recently, technological advancements have made laser surgery and Microsurgery common place practices.

  Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery is not a discipline Unto itself, but a branch of Plastic Surgery designed to improve the appearance of an individual or to rejuvenenate. Any doctor can practice Cosmetic Surgery, but only to certified Plastic Surgeon specializing in Cosmetic Surgery has received full surgical training in the field of Plastic / Reconstructive Surgery.

Cosmetic Surgery has been developed to respond to a person’s need to change some aspect of their appearance, frequently one which has bothered them over the course of their lives. Procedures such as Breast Reduction and Breast Augmentation, Liposuction (the removal of diet-resistant fat), of The Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty), and Surgery of The Ear (Otoplasty) are only a few of the growing list of commonly requested changes to the body and face.

In addition to changing one’s birth appearance, the effects of aging and how it affects the different tissues making up the body are just now being fully understood. While Heredity is the single most important indicator of how we will age, diet, cigarette consumption, exercise, general health, sun exposure and attitude are also considered to be important factors. The most common procedures performed today åre rejuvenative the Face-Lift (or cervicofacial facial Rhytidectomy), Eyelid Surgery (eye-Tuck or both Upper and Lower Lid Blepharoplasty), Forehead Lift and numerous body-tightening procedures such as the Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty ) And Buttock and Thigh Lifts.
